About Us
Homes for Iowa, Inc. (HFI), is a non-profit organization in a public-private partnership with Iowa Prison Industries (IPI). HFI’s mission is to “Be the premier public-private partnership that trains offenders, reduces recidivism, and benefits Iowans”. Initially launched in 2019, HFI has built, sold, and moved over 100 homes in the years since, training prior offenders in all aspects of the homebuilding process as they work toward earning certificates in: OSHA 10 for construction, and NCCER Construction Craft Laborer 1, as well as fostering the potential for apprenticeships in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
When working with HFI, you can expect to have a direct impact in addressing the housing shortage in Iowa by participating in the building of affordable, energy-efficient homes, while also aiding incarcerated individuals to access new skills and prepare for successful re-entry into the community.
About the Opportunity
Homes for Iowa, Inc. (HFI) is seeking its next Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for leading, growing and managing Homes for Iowa, Inc., and supplying key leadership, analysis, and strategy to the Homes for Iowa program. The Executive Director serves as the primary person for overall public relations on behalf of the program and will be responsible to the Homes for Iowa Inc. board President first, then the Homes for Iowa, Inc. Executive Committee (President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer), and the Homes for Iowa, Inc. Board of Directors.
The Executive Director will also work closely with IPI staff and managers, and Homes for Iowa contracted staff (sales/marketing, fiscal agent, and third-party building inspector).
This role empowers a proactive, growth-focused professional who values autonomy and excels in relationship-building.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary contact for Homes for Iowa, Inc. and a principal in the Homes for Iowa program.
- Execute and update the strategic plan
- Grow home sales to maximize organizational mission
- Maintain and develop key relationship with IPI
- Analyze and describe the current state of organization financially, and through reaching its vision, mission, and strategic objectives.
- Develop annual organization budgets and financial strategy.
- Develop internal and external relationships to reach the organization's vision, mission, and strategic objectives.
- Responsible for Board of Director relations and board meetings.
- Create fund-raising strategies around the organization’s vision, mission, and strategic objectives.
- Increase employment opportunities and benefits for Homes for Iowa incarcerated crew members.
- Create and maintain key external relationships with Federal, State, and Local government contracts, Councils of Governments, developers, and contractors.
About You
You are passionate about helping people, and step up to meet challenges with a can-do, service focused attitude. You have experience running or working with a business or non-profit organization at a high level, are familiar with sales and marketing, and have the business literacy and financial acumen to lead the market and sell to grow. The minimum qualifications are as follows:
- Bachelor’s degree and/or associate’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Management level/director experience related to a business or nonprofit management, supervision of employees, and understanding of public/non-profit administration and private/public partnerships.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in the housing industry, including but not limited to: construction, development, materials, supply chain, finance, and restrictive land covenants.
- Experience in fundraising, financial analysis, and financial strategy.
