About Us

Julie and Scott Halpert founded Garrett’s Space in 2018 after losing their 23-year-old son Garrett, to suicide in 2017 and witnessing first-hand the dearth of effective and attractive supplemental support options for young adults struggling with depression and/or anxiety. The vision for Garrett’s Space was informed by their experiences, those of many other families, and leading mental health experts. Out of these efforts, Garrett’s Space is creating a continuum of programming designed specifically for young adults (18-28 years old) to improve their mental health, promote connections with peers and community, and save lives. Garrett’s Space believes it is critical to create programming and spaces that are evidence-informed, effective, and appeal to struggling young adults who are often discouraged and unwilling to try traditional approaches and options with an institutional feel.

The organization is creating a residential retreat with a non-medical focus that promotes wellness, healing, self-worth, and resilience for young adults. Today Garrett’s Space offers virtual wellness programming for young adults struggling with anxiety and depression. In August 2023, the organization purchased a 76-acre property near Ann Arbor and are preparing to build a campus providing residential and day programming for young adults. The Build Garrett’s Space: Bringing Hope to Life capital campaign was launched in October 2023 and currently has raised $8.7M toward the $13.5M campaign goal. Construction is scheduled to begin by the spring 2025. the goal is to make Garrett's Space a model of support that can be replicated nationwide. During three to four week stays, our participants will be surrounded by a community of caring staff and peers, engage in facilitated peer support groups, engage in mood lifting activities including yoga, meditation, cooking, art, gardening, music, journaling, and exercise, and connect with their therapist via telehealth.
